The venue was small, the audience even smaller, and the organisation poor, but still it was a bit of a treat because the set consisted mostly of old songs which have not been played live for many years. Unfortunately the set had to be cut short, thus robbing the citizens of Derby of a preview of the World Cup anthem 'E for England' which almost blew the roof off during the sound check.
What with it being a small crowd and everything, Spizz decided to make some bold artistic gestures in terms of his stage outfit... eventually appearing onstage without trousers after the band persuaded him not to follow his first instincts and sing stark bollock-naked. The home-made hat and mask which were props for the cover of the single 'The Model' also made an appearance.
As for the music.. I personally would have preferred to have heard 'Islands', Jungle Fever, E For England and some of my other favourites, but the deal was to stick mainly to what was on the records. However, it was great to hear some of the old favourites like Cold City and 6000 Crazy re-worked for a full band, and the high point for me (as always) was when Spock's Missing departs from the studio version and breaks into a ska rhythm. My only real complaint was that the set was at least 20 minutes too short.
A few of the pictures I didn't get round to using on the photos page.
